Privacy Policy

The short version

Your activities and routes are stored on your device — no account is required to use Trace.
Location is used only while you are recording an activity, never silently in the background.
We do not sell your data, run ad networks, or embed third-party trackers.
You can delete any activity — or all of your data — at any time.

Trace ("Trace", "we", "us") is a multi-sport activity tracker for iOS operated by ifconfiger. This policy explains what data the app accesses, how it is used, and the choices you have. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not use the app.

1. Information the app accesses

Location data (GPS)

When you start an activity, Trace uses your device's GPS to draw your route and calculate distance, pace, speed and elevation. Location is accessed only during an active recording session. When you pause or stop the activity, tracking stops. Trace does not access your location for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to recording the activity you started.

Activity data you create

Routes, timestamps, durations, sport type, and the metrics computed from a session (distance, pace, speed, elevation, splits) are saved as your activity history. This data is stored locally on your device.

Motion & fitness data

With your permission, Trace may use iOS motion sensors to improve distance and cadence accuracy. You can decline this and still record activities using GPS alone.

Diagnostics (optional)

If you opt in, Trace may collect anonymous crash and performance diagnostics to help us fix bugs. This data contains no routes, no precise location, and nothing that identifies you. It is off unless you enable it.

2. How your data is used

To record an activity and render its live and summary metrics and map.
To build your on-device activity history and weekly totals.
To improve tracking accuracy (only when motion/fitness access is granted).
To diagnose crashes and improve reliability (only if diagnostics are enabled).

We do not use your location or activity data for advertising, ad targeting, or to build a profile of you.

3. Where your data lives

By default, your activities are stored on your device. If you enable Apple's iCloud backup for the app, your data is included in your encrypted iCloud backup, which is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. If a future version offers optional account-based sync, the details and any server storage will be described here before that feature is enabled.

4. Sharing your data

Trace does not share your data with third parties for their own purposes. Data leaves your device only when you choose an action that requires it, for example:

Exporting or sharing an activity (e.g. a route image or a GPX/summary file) to another app you pick.
Writing a workout to Apple Health, if you grant that permission.

We do not sell personal data, and we do not use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs that track you across apps.

5. Your choices and rights

Delete activities: remove any single activity, or clear your entire history, from within the app.
Revoke permissions: turn off Location, Motion & Fitness, or Health access any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security.
Export: export your activities so you keep your own copy.
Delete everything: deleting the app removes the activity data stored on your device.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA (access, correction, deletion, portability, and objection). To exercise them, contact us at hi@ifconfiger.com.

6. Data retention

On-device activity data is kept until you delete it or uninstall the app. Optional diagnostics, if enabled, are retained only as long as needed to investigate reliability issues.

7. Children

Trace is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country, e.g. 16 in parts of the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including keeping data on-device by default and relying on the platform's built-in protections. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we work to safeguard your information.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above, and for material changes we will provide a notice in the app. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
